Sri Venkateswara University started as Post Graduate centre in the year 1968. In 1976, the S.V.U. Postgraduate Centre attained autonomous status. The University is named after a patron of learning and the arts, Sri Krishnadevaraya, of the Vijayanagara Empire of the 16th century. Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU) is a public university in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, India, established on July 25, 1981. It is located in rural surroundings in a broad campus of about 500 acres of land. Prof. K. RAMAKRISHNA REDDY assumed charge as Vice-Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Anantapur on 11-11-2011. The SK University offers 38 Post Graduate (PG) courses through 28 departments. 11 postgraduate courses are being conducted at the P.G. centre, Kurnool through 8 departments.

It includes University Science Instrumentation Centre, Computer Centre, health centre, gymnasium, outdoor stadium, auditorium and adequate space to accommodate departments of studies, laboratories, hostels, and housing for the staff.
